WildCard Opening: Star Trek Quilts

WildCard presents artist Elliot McNally’s Star Trek Quilts.

Opening Night Event on January 28, 2010.

WildCard, recently named by Pittsburgh CityPapers as the “Best Store for People Who Don’t Get Enough of Handmade Arcade,” is presenting the Pittsburgh Premiere of artist Elliot McNally’s Star Trek Quilt series. The exhibit is on display from January 15 until February 24, 2010.

In addition to selling arts & crafts from local artists, storeowner Rebecca Morris is committed to hosting monthly shows in the dedicated gallery space in the back of WildCard, located in the heart of Lawrenceville.

Star Trek Quilts, which comprises sixteen pieces, is hand-sewn and embroidered by McNally. All of the pieces feature images from the original Star Trek television program, which ran from 1966-1969 and has inspired a rabid cult following. Says McNally, “Out of all the cult-phenomenon paraphernalia that exists because of Star Trek, I hoped that
quilts would bring out the tongue and cheek kitschiness of the show and honor the handmade scenes and other world depictions of the original program.”

McNally is a new arrival to Pittsburgh, living in Bloomfield, and is a graduate of the Savannah College of Art & Design. The pieces are made by hand and machine quilting, embroidering, and appliqué using found and recycled materials such as couch upholstery, fur hats, and old bathing suits.

WildCard owner Morris says that “Elliot’s work was fun, interesting and above all, original. I knew it was something I wanted to show in my store.”

WildCard is hosting a free opening reception on Thursday, January 28th from 6 to 9pm. The artist will be present for the reception.
