Alternate Histories: Pittsburgh

WildCard presents the premiere of Matthew Buchholz’s Alternate Histories: Pittsburgh series on August 13th, 2010.
After Elliot McNally’s Star Trek Quilts series in January, WildCard returns to the pop art mold with Matthew Buchholz’s Alternate Histories: Pittsburgh premiering on Friday, August 13th.
The series consists of replicas of old posters, engravings, and historical photographs from Pittsburgh’s past, doctored to include fantastical images of monsters, steampunk machinery, and science gone awry. By combining the pop sci-fi appeal of 1950s monster movies with traditional historic images, the Alternate Histories series encourages the viewer to look at history in a new way. Each piece is accompanied by a satirical description of the event taking place.
“The goal of each piece is to look completely normal to someone just passing by,” says Buchholz. “Then, upon a closer view, you start to notice just what’s wrong with this picture.” By focusing entirely on Pittsburgh history, Buchholz is also able to place oversize figures like Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Frick in surprising new contexts.
This opening marks the start of a new series for former filmmaker Buchholz, whose film & video exploration “CinemaFantastique” previously showed at Future Tenant. In
addition to the 11 framed pieces on display, prints of the work will be available for sale.
WildCard is hosting an opening night party on Friday, August 13, from 6 to 9pm. Admission to the party and to the store gallery is free.

Call for Donations: Kids and Art
We received this email from Adina and just knew we had to get the word out. Please help to support these great programs. Who knows, your kids might even be the ones benefiting!
Hello everyone, I hope this finds you well. Many of you know that summertime for me means going all over town teaching various art related summer camps, and the one thing all programs I teach have in common is SMALL BUDGETS!
So, rather than have kids make poor quality projects, I try to contact people who may have art and craft items they no longer need. Many of you have generously donated in the past, and I thank you again for what you have given me. If you are able to donate again, I and the wonderful kids I get to work with thank you
![]()
All those, “Why did I buy that?” moments can turn into summer fun. Anyone who bought something and found it not quite right, I can promise it will be found perfect by a happy kid.
Please contact me via email to arrange a time to pick-up the materials. All of the organizations I work with can give you tax receipts for your donations.
Here is the list of things I need most
- Beads, and anything beading related
- wire, it can be florist wire, craft wire, even electrical
- metals for jewelry making.
- Yarns
- Fabrics
- Old Jeans, we are making all kinds of things from old jeans
- fabric paint
- Embroidery floss or thread
- batting and fiber fill
- embroidery hoops
- crochet hooks
- music related items, drumming in particular
Anything you can give is greatly needed and will be enjoyed!!
Thanks and hope that all of you are doing well
